i was going…

Drawing of Muesli…to write about how I’ve not eaten any sugar or wheat for over a week now and how much better I’m feeling for it. I was going to write that, but just now I’m not feeling so great. Probably just time for an afternoon nap. The irony is I have been feeling more energetic this last week or so. Doing more in the studio. Enjoying getting back to painting. Seeing possibilities again. But as I feel better I start to panic about my health. Not what is actually wrong with me, but what could be. Hypochondria seems to grab hold of whatever extra energy I have and starts to construct all sorts of nasty scenarios. I can’t, it seems, just enjoy feeling a little better.

Of course, when I do start to panic I start to crave sugar and the comfort of something packed with it and wheat. I don’t think I’m going to succumb just yet, I’ll try some hot tea and a nap first (and actually there isn’t anything that fits the bill here just now luckily). It’s just wheat and sugar free muesli just doesn’t hit the spot. Interestingly though it is something that I can eat for breakfast, that isn’t sausages and potatoes, and that doesn’t leave me shaky and in need of eating again within the hour. I’m sure my heart will be pleased and might even mean I loose some of the weight I’ve been putting on of late. That must bode well for the future - that’s if I have one of course…

that’s fantastic to be off them for over a week. i’m still having withdrawal (i.e. cravings with offset any noticable health benefit!). do you use stevia as a sweetener? that seems to help me. and eating carrots and eating yogurt with fruit…? do you have any things that seem to help you? (I’m always looking for suggestions!)

Hello Hetty - no I don’t use a sweetner. I’m lucky that I don’t seem to crave the sugar too much (beyond the emotional need of course!), but I am eating more fruit. When I’ve done this before I used to allow myself the odd treat which helped a lot - a slice of very good cake from my Favourite Cafe usually. Interestingly the longer I went without the less I needed the treats. It fell apart when I had a bit of health scare a couple of years ago and I immediately went back to comfort eating. Not quite sure how to combat that one yet.

    Good luck.

Fruit is full of sugar! An apple has aproximately SEVEN lumps of sugar in it.

I better be careful then - I wouldn’t want to break a tooth on one of them.

I was being quiet specific when I said I was avoiding sugar. I was talking about the refined white or brown stuff not all forms of sugars (or carbohydrates). Fructose, the “sugar” in an apple doesn’t cause the same sort of blood sugar rush and crash that I get when I eat more refined foods. Boring, but true for me.

Yes, that’s true for me too. Our body can handle fruit sugar much better! It normally only takes me a couple of weeks to lose the urge. But this time it’s taking longer. I think it’s because some sugar had been snuck into something I ordered at a restaurant and that caused the cravings for alcohol, etc. I can’t wait until chocolate loveliness no longer looks good at all! :)
by the way, don’t know if you have this problem, but i’ve blogged about it:
