I’ve started to make a very big drawing in a wonderfullt thick
notebook I found in Muji. Very tired this morning after walking
(nearly) everywhere yesterday. Wondering if I should stay another day.
Had great pie by the side of the Thames with June.

Imagine if it could be linked up to a blog; suddenly it would be possible to effortlessly capture and publish every aspect of our gloriously mundane lives (even the fact that I’m now sitting and blogging in the toilet)…

I’m very interested in the idea of finding ways of making work that is largely unedited. Capturing moments and revealing them without stepping in and selecting. I keep thinking I should have a 24 hour Twitter. Maybe I will. Could I stop myself editing what I’m revealing?

I feel like I need to take another leap. Maybe this is like learning a language - you’re constantly reaching a plateau that feels frustrating.

How can I leap? I’m thinking that trying to create the two or three persona of me in my work is a bit of a coldasac, but I don’t what to do instead. Draw something? Make something. I need to make something. I can work around the making, but there needs to be something doesn’t there? The One Hour Exhibition perhaps? Some drawings? Something. A video? A website? A self-portrait? Or am I I just making a self portrait constantly? But then I need to do that outside the studio, maybe not just about the work. The work can capture it. But I don’t want to just make work about the work.

That’s the central part of my problem isn’t it? The emptiness of it.

At the moment my life is so caught up in the department and my studio space that I can only see that. Surely my life is richer. The work can capture and reflect that. Can’t it?

Helen Sear gave the Lunchtime Lecture1 yesterday. I was so tired (after waking up at 3.30 am and not able to go back to sleep) that I had planned not to go. But I took a quick look at her Axis page just before I was about to crawl home to bed and decided I would go along after all. I’m so glad I did. She was inspired and inspiring, an artist who makes works because she wants to understand something and who is clearly on a life long journey. Well worth missing out on some sleep for.

I’m starting to wonder if all the sleeping I did over the last decade and a half means I just don’t need so much anymore. I’ve been worrying that I’ve been waking up after only five hours or so (which if I nod off at 10.00 pm is rather annoying) but perhaps it is just things evening out. Now wouldn’t that be nice?
